PayNow and GrabPay on Shopify in Singapore

Information checked as of 2 October 2026

Sooner or later a Singapore customer asks the question: "Can I PayNow you?" Shopify's own checkout handles cards and wallets well, but PayNow isn't on its list, and GrabPay is there only for some stores. So most Singapore merchants who want local methods add a second payment provider. This guide covers what Shopify Payments includes in Singapore, which providers fill the gap, and how to set up, test, refund and reconcile without surprises.

The short answer

What PayNow is, and one rule to know

PayNow is Singapore's instant transfer service. The Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS), which runs the scheme, describes it as a way for customers of participating banks and major payment institutions to send Singapore dollars instantly through FAST, using a mobile number, NRIC/FIN or Virtual Payment Address instead of an account number. Businesses receive PayNow through PayNow Corporate by linking their UEN. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) describes PayNow as an addressing service that runs on top of FAST, available 24/7.

For online checkout, the usual flow is a QR code. The customer scans it in their banking app and confirms the payment.

The rule: you can't charge customers extra for paying by PayNow. ABS prohibits merchants from adding a surcharge to PayNow payments, and MAS confirmed that rule in a 2025 parliamentary reply. Whatever your provider charges you for PayNow is your cost to price in, not a fee to add at checkout.

What Shopify Payments covers in Singapore

Shopify's Help Center lists these methods for Singapore:

PayNow isn't on the list. Several independent Singapore payment guides, including Airwallex's, say the same.

About GrabPay: Shopify says it's in early access and isn't available to every eligible store. If it doesn't appear in your Shopify Payments settings, your store isn't in the programme yet. Where it is available, Shopify notes some limits:

To use Shopify Payments at all, Shopify requires a full SGD checking account with a Singapore bank that can receive FAST or RTGS transfers.

Why you can't just plug in your own Stripe account

Elsewhere in the world, Stripe is a common way to add PayNow and GrabPay. Stripe's own docs list both for Singapore businesses: PayNow as a QR code the customer scans, and GrabPay as a redirect to Grab to approve the payment.

On Shopify, though, that route is closed. Shopify's Help Center says that if Shopify Payments is supported where your business is located, Stripe won't be available for you to activate, because Stripe is Shopify Payments' banking partner. It adds that if you can't use Shopify Payments, for example because of what you sell, standalone Stripe isn't an alternative either. Singapore is a Shopify Payments country, so plan on Shopify Payments for cards and another listed provider for PayNow.

Stripe can still be useful outside your Shopify checkout, for example for Payment Links or invoices, but that's a separate system to reconcile.

Option 1: HitPay

HitPay is a Singapore payments company with a Shopify app, HitPay Payment Gateway, in the Shopify App Store. The app is free to install, and HitPay bills its transaction fees separately from your Shopify invoice. HitPay appears in Shopify's list of payment providers for Singapore.

Methods. HitPay's Shopify docs list the methods you can test in sandbox mode: PayNow, cards, ShopeePay, GrabPay, GrabPay PayLater, Atome and DOKU QRIS. Apple Pay and Google Pay appear once a customer picks cards, and only in browsers that support them. What your customers actually see depends on what's activated on your HitPay account, and HitPay says PayNow is on by default for Singapore businesses.

How it looks at checkout. HitPay shows up as a payment option in your Shopify checkout. The customer then chooses a method on HitPay's checkout page.

Setup, per HitPay's docs:

  1. Create a HitPay account and activate the payment methods you want.
  2. Install HitPay Payment Gateway from the Shopify App Store and click Add app.
  3. Log in to HitPay when it redirects you, then return to your Shopify admin and click Manage on the HitPay app.
  4. Pick the method logos to show at checkout, then click Activate app.
  5. In the HitPay dashboard, go to Integrations, select Shopify, and choose which methods to offer.

Limits worth knowing:

Option 2: other providers in Shopify's Singapore list

Shopify's payment provider directory, filtered to Singapore, lists dozens of providers. A few that come up for local methods:

Before you sign up, confirm two things with the provider: that the method you want is supported in its Shopify integration, not just its own checkout, and how its payouts arrive.

Option 3: PayNow as a manual payment method

Shopify lets you create a custom manual payment method. You name it, say "PayNow", and add payment instructions, such as your UEN or a PayNow QR code. Customers see the instructions on the order confirmation page. Shopify marks those orders unpaid until you mark them paid, and it doesn't charge third-party transaction fees on manual payments.

The trade-off is work: no automatic confirmation, so you match each bank transfer to an order by hand before you ship. That's fine for low volume or B2B orders, and tiring by the fiftieth order of a sale weekend. The no-surcharge rule still applies.

Fees: where to look

Rates change, so we won't quote them. There are usually two layers:

A common setup is Shopify Payments for cards and wallets, with one extra provider just for PayNow (and GrabPay if Shopify hasn't offered it to you yet). Shopify says third-party providers can run alongside Shopify Payments. For a wider look at what running a store costs, see what Shopify and WooCommerce actually cost.

FAQ

Does Shopify Payments support PayNow in Singapore?

No. Shopify's Singapore payment methods page lists cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay, a set of local methods and USDC, but not PayNow. To take PayNow, add a third-party provider listed for Singapore, such as HitPay, or set PayNow up as a manual payment method and confirm each transfer yourself.

Can I accept GrabPay with Shopify Payments?

Possibly. Shopify lists GrabPay as an early-access local payment method for Singapore Shopify Payments accounts, for customers in Singapore paying in SGD. It isn't available to every store. If it isn't in your Shopify Payments settings, a third-party provider such as HitPay or Grab's own checkout integration can add it.

Can I use my own Stripe account on Shopify in Singapore?

Not for Shopify checkout. Shopify says Stripe won't be available to activate in countries where Shopify Payments is supported, because Stripe is Shopify Payments' banking partner. Stripe does support PayNow and GrabPay for Singapore businesses, but on Shopify you'd use Shopify Payments plus another listed provider.

Can I charge customers extra for paying by PayNow?

No. The Association of Banks in Singapore, which owns the PayNow scheme, prohibits merchants from adding surcharges to PayNow payments, and MAS confirmed this in a 2025 parliamentary reply. Build your provider's fees into your prices instead.

Do third-party payment providers cost more on Shopify?

Usually there's an extra layer. Shopify charges a third-party transaction fee on third-party and alternative gateways, even when Shopify Payments is active. Manual payments are excluded. Your provider also charges its own fees. Check Shopify's pricing page and the provider's pricing page for current rates.
