Choosing a Shopify theme for a Singapore store
Your theme controls how your whole storefront looks and loads, from the home page to the cart. For a Singapore store it also has to show GST-inclusive prices clearly, work well on mobile, and fit the way you deliver. This guide covers how to choose, test and switch a Shopify theme: free versus paid themes, what to check before you commit, how themes handle Singapore-specific needs, and when it's worth hiring a Shopify Partner.
This is general information, not legal, tax or professional advice. It summarises Shopify's Help Center, shopify.dev, IRAS and Google Search Central as of the date above. Shopify changes its themes and plans often, so check the live pages in the References. We don't recommend any paid theme or agency here.
The short version
- Start free. The Theme Store includes free themes built by Shopify, such as Dawn, Horizon and Spotlight. You can change themes later without losing your products.
- Test on your own content. Preview with your products and photos, on a phone, before you publish.
- Check speed with real data. Shopify's web performance reports show your store's Core Web Vitals, and Google recommends good scores.
- Singapore checks: GST-inclusive price labels, SGD display, pickup availability and your checkout. Test each yourself.
- Back up before you change anything. Duplicate your live theme, and publish only after previewing.
Free or paid?
Shopify's Theme Store has two kinds of themes: free themes developed by Shopify, and paid themes developed by third-party designers. When we checked, the Theme Store's free filter listed 24 themes, including Dawn, Horizon, Spotlight, Refresh, Publisher, Origin and Studio. We don't quote prices for paid themes because they change. See the Theme Store for current prices.
The differences that matter:
- Support. For a free theme from Shopify, Shopify Support can help with certain predefined customisations, and on the Basic plan or higher you get up to 60 minutes of free design support. It doesn't write custom code. For a paid theme, support comes from the theme's developer, and Shopify notes that third-party developers don't provide customisations.
- Licence. A theme you buy from the Theme Store is licensed only to the store you bought it for. Unlicensed themes aren't eligible for support or updates.
- Preview before buying. You can preview and customise a paid theme in the theme editor, but you need to buy it before you can publish it.
- Plan limits. Shopify says stores on the Starter plan can only add the Spotlight theme. Basic, Grow and Advanced stores can add up to 20 themes.
For most new stores, a free theme is enough to launch with. Pay for a theme when you've seen a specific feature in a preview that you need and can't get another way.
What to check before you choose
Online Store 2.0 support
Online Store 2.0 is Shopify's current theme architecture, with JSON templates and sections that you can add to most pages. Shopify's Theme Store requires every theme to support Sections Everywhere for Online Store 2.0 compatibility, and Dawn is Shopify's reference theme with Online Store 2.0 features built in. Themes that don't receive updates, such as old themes bought outside the Theme Store, may not get newer features. Shopify says features that need an updated theme architecture won't be applied to an older theme.
Performance
Shopify requires Theme Store themes to score an average of at least 60 for Lighthouse performance and 90 for Lighthouse accessibility across the home, collection and product pages, on both desktop and mobile. Treat those as minimums, tested on Shopify's own sample store. Your results will differ with your photos, apps and scripts.
To see real results, use Shopify's web performance reports. They show your store's Largest Contentful Paint (loading), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness) and Cumulative Layout Shift (stability), using real visitor data from the past 30 days on the summary, on the Themes page of your admin. Shopify's targets for "Good" are LCP of 2,500 ms or less, INP of 200 ms or less and CLS of 0.1 or less. Google's guidance uses the same figures. Shopify notes that data can be delayed by up to 36 hours, and that new stores or stores in private mode may not have metrics yet. The reports also mark app installs and theme updates, which helps you spot what slowed things down.
Mobile and accessibility
Preview every theme on a phone, since much of your traffic will come from one. Lighthouse's accessibility score only covers automated checks. Chrome's documentation says manual audits aren't included in the score, and web.dev says automated tools can't cover every accessibility requirement, so manual checks are needed too, such as tabbing through the page with the keyboard to make sure the order is logical and focus is visible. Do that on the home, product and cart pages.
Support, updates and reviews
For themes from the Theme Store, free or paid, Shopify says you can add updated versions to your draft themes for free when they're released. Themes bought outside the Theme Store don't get updates through Shopify. Read the theme's documentation and support options before buying, and read the Theme Store reviews. Shopify warns that some apps may not work with a new theme, so check the apps you rely on first.
Singapore checks
GST-inclusive prices and tax labels
If you're GST-registered, IRAS says you must display and quote prices inclusive of GST to the public, including website prices. IRAS lists "$100 + GST" as unacceptable. Our GST guide explains registration and when to charge.
On Shopify, Singapore is one of the regions where tax-inclusive pricing applies. Shopify's Markets settings let you choose Dynamic taxes for a market, and its tax pages list Basic Tax as the tax service for Singapore stores. Shopify's Theme Store requires the product page to use cart.taxes_included to show an indication that taxes are included. In practice: turn on the setting, then check the product page, cart and checkout for a clear "tax included" message, and fix the wording in the theme editor if it's missing. We couldn't confirm what each theme shows by default, so test it.
SGD display, languages and the country selector
Shopify's Theme Store requires a currency and country selector when merchants sell in local currencies to other countries. The shopify.dev documentation says themes should offer country and language selectors when multiple currencies or languages are enabled. A Singapore-only store selling in SGD doesn't need a selector. If you also sell to Malaysia or Indonesia, see our guide to Shopify Markets for Malaysia and Indonesia and test the selector in your preview. Right-to-left support isn't needed for English, Chinese, Malay or Tamil. When we checked, none of the 24 free themes in the Theme Store carried that feature tag, so you won't miss anything.
Pickup and delivery messages
Shopify's Theme Store requires pickup availability on the product page, so shoppers can see whether an item can be collected before adding it to the cart. If you offer pickup in store, check that the message appears and shows the right location. Delivery rates, payment methods and the checkout itself aren't controlled by the theme editor. Shopify says the checkout is customised in a separate checkout and accounts editor. See our guides to cash on delivery and alternatives and, for POS, Shopify POS for a Singapore shop.
POS
Your online store theme doesn't style Shopify POS. Shopify says POS appearance is customised through the POS editor: smart grids, lock screens, receipts and customer displays. So a theme change doesn't change your till, and you don't need to pick a theme for it.
Structured data and SEO
Shopify's structured_data Liquid filter outputs schema.org Product data (or ProductGroup, if a product has variants) and Article data, and Dawn was updated in 2024 to use it for product and article markup. Check what your own theme outputs with Google's Rich Results Test on a product page.
Beyond that, a theme affects SEO mostly through speed and stability, since Google recommends good Core Web Vitals, and through clean page structure. Make sure each page has a single clear heading, and that your images have alt text. Our Shopify SEO checklist covers the settings, and local SEO for a Singapore store covers business markup, which themes don't add for you.
How to preview and test a theme safely
- Add it as a draft. Shopify lets you have several themes, but only one is published at a time.
- Preview with your real products. Customise it in the theme editor and look at the home, collection, product, cart and search pages on desktop and mobile.
- Share a preview link. You can share a preview of any unpublished theme for feedback. You can't share a preview of the published theme.
- Run a test order. Check the price labels, delivery options and payment methods all the way to checkout.
- Check your apps. Make sure the ones that matter work with the new theme.
- Publish. Your previous theme moves to Draft themes, with your changes kept.
- Check your performance reports over the next days, since they can lag by up to 36 hours.
Switching themes safely
- Duplicate first. Shopify recommends making a backup copy before you customise, so you can discard changes and start again. The copy is named "Copy of" plus the theme name. You need a free theme slot to do this, since the limit is 20 on most plans.
- Download if needed. You can download a theme. Shopify says downloads don't include your products, pages, menus or files, which stay in your store.
- Note your customisations. Custom code and theme settings may not carry over to a different theme, so write down what you've changed.
- Keep the old one. After you publish a new theme, the old one stays in your Draft themes so you can switch back.
DIY or hire a Shopify Partner?
Shopify Support handles only basic customisations on free themes and doesn't write custom code. Shopify says that if you need more, you can hire a Shopify Partner. Shopify's Partner Directory has a Singapore page where you can filter partners by services such as theme customisation, store build or redesign, SEO and POS setup, and by price, language and partner tier. We haven't vetted any of them and don't endorse any, so compare several, ask for examples of Singapore stores they've built, and agree the scope and who owns the code in writing.
A sensible split: do the content and settings yourself, and hire help for custom code, complex layouts or migrations.
Theme checklist
- Shortlist two or three themes, starting with Shopify's free ones.
- Confirm Online Store 2.0 support and that the theme comes from the Theme Store.
- Preview each one on a phone using your real products and photos.
- Check GST-inclusive labels, SGD prices and pickup messages in the preview and at checkout.
- Tab through the key pages with a keyboard.
- Check the apps you depend on.
- Duplicate your live theme before changing anything.
- Publish, then watch your Core Web Vitals and check product markup with the Rich Results Test.
Frequently asked questions
Which Shopify theme should a new Singapore store start with?
Start with a free theme from Shopify, such as Dawn, Horizon or Spotlight, and test it on your own products before you pay for anything. Shopify's Theme Store lists free themes built by Shopify and paid themes from third-party developers. Stores on the Starter plan can only add Spotlight.
Do I have to pay for a Shopify theme?
No. The Shopify Theme Store has free themes made by Shopify and paid themes made by other developers. You can preview a paid theme before buying, but you must buy it before you publish it. Check the Theme Store for current prices, because they vary by theme.
Will my theme show GST-inclusive prices?
Shopify's Theme Store requires a theme's product page to use cart.taxes_included to show that taxes are included when a store uses tax-inclusive prices. Whether your store does depends on your tax and market settings, so test it. IRAS says a GST-registered business must display prices inclusive of GST.
How do I test a new theme without breaking my live store?
Add it as an unpublished theme, preview it, and share the preview link if you want feedback. You can't share a preview of your published theme. Before you edit your live theme, duplicate it so you have a backup. Publishing a new theme moves your old one to Draft themes, so you can switch back.
Does my theme affect Google rankings?
Indirectly. Google says it recommends good Core Web Vitals for success in Search, and a theme affects how fast and stable your pages are. Shopify's web performance reports show your real-user Core Web Vitals, so you can check how your theme performs with your own apps and images.
Ready to try a theme? A Shopify trial lets you add free themes, preview them with your own products and run a test order before you launch.
