Local SEO for a Singapore Shopify store
Local SEO is how a business shows up when someone nearby searches for what it sells: the map pack, Google Maps, and the ordinary results under them. For a Singapore Shopify store it matters most if you have a shop, a showroom, a pickup point or a service area, but even an online-only store can send clear "this is a Singapore business" signals to search engines. This guide covers what Google's own documentation says about Business Profiles, local ranking, domains, language targeting, structured data and reviews, and how each piece maps to settings in Shopify.
This is general information, not legal or professional advice. It summarises Google's, SGNIC's, Shopify's and Apple's published help pages as of the date above. These pages change, so check the live versions in the References before you act.
Start here: do you qualify for a Google Business Profile?
The Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the local "map pack". Google's eligibility rules are strict, and they decide how much of local SEO applies to you:
- Shops with a physical location. A business qualifies if it makes in-person contact with customers during its stated hours. Google expects permanent signage with your business name at the address, and staff there during opening hours.
- Service-area businesses. If you travel to customers (for example, installation or on-site services), you can have one profile with a service area and your home or office address hidden. Google says the service area shouldn't usually extend more than about 2 hours' drive from your base.
- Hybrid businesses. A shop that also delivers or serves customers on site can show its address and add a service area, as long as the address is staffed and open to customers.
- Online-only stores are not eligible. Google's eligibility page lists "brands, organizations, artists, and other online-only businesses" as ineligible. A virtual office, a rented mailing address, a P.O. box, or a co-working desk without signage and staff doesn't count either.
One more rule that catches some sellers: Google doesn't allow businesses selling age-restricted goods such as alcohol to be service-area businesses without a storefront.
If you're online-only, skip the Business Profile and focus on the sections below on domains, content, structured data and Search Console. A pop-up stall or market booth is a grey area; Google's rules are written around permanent locations with stated hours, so read the guidelines before you create a profile.
Set up the profile properly
Google's guidelines for representing your business set out what the profile must contain:
- Name: your real-world name as it appears on your signage, website and receipts. No taglines, keywords, locations or phone numbers in the name; Google says extra words can get the profile suspended.
- Address: a precise address. Unit and floor numbers are fine on the second line. Only one profile per location.
- Category: as few as possible, as specific as possible. Pick categories that finish the sentence "this business IS a…", not things it has.
- Phone and website: a number under your direct control (a local number rather than a call centre where possible) and a website that represents the location. For a Shopify shop, that's usually your store's home page or a dedicated store-location page.
- Hours: your customer-facing hours, with special hours for public holidays.
- Description: no links and no promotions or prices.
Then verify the profile. Google's local ranking tips say verified, complete and accurate profiles are more likely to show up in local results.
Keep your name, address and phone consistent
SEO people call this NAP consistency: the same Name, Address and Phone number everywhere your business appears. Google doesn't publish a NAP rule in those words, but two of its pages point the same way. The profile guidelines ask you to represent the business "as it's consistently represented and recognized in the real world across signage, stationery, and other branding", and Google's targeting guidance lists local addresses and phone numbers on your pages as one of the signals it uses to work out which country a site serves.
In Shopify, that means using the same details in:
- the store address in Settings > General (it appears on invoices and some theme footers)
- your location in Settings > Locations, which also drives pickup in store and POS
- your footer and Contact page
- your Business Profile, Apple and Bing listings, and social profiles
Write the address the way it's written in Singapore, with the block or building number, street, unit, and the six-digit postal code, and use the same format in every place.
How Google ranks local results
Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Its Business Profile help page names three main factors:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Complete, detailed business information helps.
- Distance: how far you are from the searcher, or from the location in the search.
- Prominence: how well known the business is. Google says this draws on information such as how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help. (The same page also calls this factor "popularity" in one line.)
You can't change distance. You can improve relevance with a complete profile and a clear website, and prominence with genuine reviews and mentions from other Singapore sites.
.sg or .com.sg, and connecting it to Shopify
Google treats country-code domains such as .sg as a strong signal that a site is meant for that country. That's useful if you only sell in Singapore and limiting if you plan to sell widely: Google notes a ccTLD "can only target a single country". If you also sell to Malaysia or Indonesia, a .com with Shopify Markets subfolders may be the more flexible choice; our Shopify Markets guide covers that setup.
Singapore domains are run by SGNIC, and the two common choices have different rules:
.sg: anyone can register. A foreign applicant must appoint a local agent as administrative contact..com.sg: for commercial entities registered, or in the process of registering, with ACRA, Enterprise Singapore or a Singapore professional body. If you apply while your ACRA registration is pending, SGNIC's rules give you 30 days to show proof. A foreign company can apply if it appoints a local agent as administrative contact.
Every new .sg domain must also be verified. The administrative contact (an individual with a Singpass account or an organisation with a valid UEN and Corppass) has 21 calendar days from registration to complete verification through SGNIC's VerifiedID@SG portal. If you buy your .sg or .com.sg from a registrar outside Shopify, you then connect it to your store.
To connect a third-party domain, Shopify's help pages say to point the domain's A record to 23.227.38.65, the AAAA record to 2620:0127:f00f:5::, and the www CNAME to shops.myshopify.com., then go to Settings > Domains > Connect existing domain. Changes usually take effect within two hours but can take up to 48. Shopify issues the free TLS certificate automatically once the records point to it. Your registrar still bills and renews the domain. Then set it as your primary domain so all other URLs redirect to it.
Language and region: en-SG, hreflang and Shopify Markets
If your store only sells in Singapore in one language, you don't need hreflang at all. It matters when you have more than one version of a page, for example English and Chinese, or a Singapore and a Malaysia version.
Shopify handles this for you. When you give a market its own domain, subdomain or subfolder with a language, Shopify adds hreflang tags to every page automatically, keeps them matched to each page's canonical URL, and includes the localised URLs in your sitemap. If a theme or app also outputs hreflang tags, Shopify's developer docs say to turn off the automatic ones in Online Store > Preferences so only one source outputs them. Shopify's Translate & Adapt app, installed when you add a language, handles the translations.
Google's guidance for multilingual sites adds a few rules worth following:
- Use separate URLs for each language, not cookies or browser settings.
- Don't automatically redirect people based on their guessed language or IP address. Let them switch with a visible link.
- Keep each page in one language. Side-by-side English and Chinese on the same page makes it harder for Google to tell which language it is.
- Google ignores geo meta tags such as
geo.position, so don't bother adding them.
Local keywords and pages, without doorway pages
Write the way Singapore customers search: the product plus "Singapore", the area you're in, "same-day delivery", "self-collect", and local terms your customers actually use. Put them where they belong: page titles, headings, product and collection descriptions, and your store-location page. Our Shopify SEO checklist covers titles, meta descriptions and URLs in Shopify.
Neighbourhood or MRT pages are where stores get into trouble. Google's spam policies name "doorway abuse" and give as an example "multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page". They also list "blocks of text that list cities and regions that a web page is trying to rank for" as keyword stuffing. So:
- Good: one page per real shop or pickup point, with its own address, hours, directions from the nearest MRT station, photos, and what's stocked there.
- Good: a delivery page that explains your real delivery zones, timings and fees for different parts of Singapore.
- Avoid: 30 near-identical "Florist in Tampines", "Florist in Jurong" pages that differ only by the place name.
We couldn't find reliable, independently published data on how Singapore shoppers search that we could cite with confidence, so this guide doesn't make claims about Singapore-specific search habits. Google Search Console's Performance report will show you the real queries people use to find your store.
Structured data: what your theme already does
Structured data is code that tells search engines what a page is about. Shopify themes already output some of it. Shopify's free Dawn theme, for example, outputs Product data on product pages using Shopify's structured_data Liquid filter, and its header outputs Organization data (store name, logo and social links) and WebSite data. Other themes vary, so check yours with Google's Rich Results Test.
What most themes don't output is LocalBusiness data with your address and opening hours. If you have a shop, Google's documentation says you can add it, ideally on your store-location page, using the most specific type that fits (for example Store or a more specific subtype). The only required properties are name and address; Google recommends adding telephone with the country code (+65), openingHoursSpecification, geo coordinates and url. Since LocalBusiness is a type of Organization, Google also suggests following its Organization guidance. You can add it with a theme code edit or an SEO app, and it must match what's visible on the page.
One rule surprises people: reviews about your own business don't earn stars. Google's review snippet guidelines say that if a business controls the reviews about itself, its pages with LocalBusiness or Organization markup aren't eligible for review stars, including when the reviews come from an embedded Google or Facebook reviews widget. Product reviews on product pages are a separate case and can still be marked up under the product review rules.
Getting reviews the right way
Reviews feed prominence, and Google's rules on them are firm. From Google's Maps content policy and its Business Profile review tips:
- Don't offer incentives, such as discounts, free gifts or payment, for posting a review, changing one, or removing a negative one.
- Don't ask only happy customers. Google prohibits discouraging negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive ones.
- Don't pressure people to review on the spot or tell them what to write. Staff and family reviews count as a conflict of interest.
- Do ask everyone. Google provides a review link and QR code for your profile. Put it on receipts, packing slips, pickup notices or a post-purchase email.
- Do reply, politely and without promotions, especially to negative reviews.
If you collect customer emails or phone numbers to send review requests, check Singapore's PDPA consent rules first, especially if the message also markets something.
Google Search Console: no country setting any more
Older guides tell you to set Singapore as your target country in Search Console. That setting no longer exists. Google deprecated the International Targeting report and its country setting in September 2022, saying country targeting "was determined to have little value for the ecosystem". Google still uses hreflang.
What to do instead:
- Verify your domain in Search Console and submit your Shopify sitemap at
yourdomain/sitemap.xml. Shopify generates it automatically. - Send the location signals Google lists: a
.sgdomain if it suits you, hreflang if you have several versions, a local address and phone number on the site, prices in SGD, links from other local sites, and your Business Profile. - Use the Performance report, filtered to Singapore, to see which queries and pages get local clicks.
Apple Maps and Bing Places
Google isn't the only map. iPhone users see Apple Maps place cards, which you can claim through Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect). Apple publishes a feature-availability page by country, so check it for what's currently offered in Singapore. Microsoft runs Bing Places for Business for Bing and its partners. Use the exact same name, address, phone number and hours as your Google profile. We haven't covered either in detail, because we couldn't confirm every feature from two sources.
Tie it back to Shopify: pickup in store
If customers can collect from you, turn it on. In Shopify, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery, then Pickup in store, choose the location, activate "Let customers pick up orders directly at this location" and set an expected pickup time (Shopify's options range from 1 hour to 5 or more days). Customers then see a Pick up option at checkout and can only choose locations in their own country. Some themes also show pickup availability on product pages.
A real pickup point is a genuine local signal: it gives you a location page with an address and hours worth putting in structured data and in your Business Profile. Our Singapore shipping guide covers local delivery and pickup, and our Shopify POS guide covers selling at the counter from the same location and stock.
A short checklist
- Decide whether you qualify for a Business Profile (storefront, service area or neither).
- If you do, create and verify it with your real name, address, category, hours and phone.
- Make your name, address and phone match across Shopify, your footer and every listing.
- Choose your domain (
.sg,.com.sgor.com) and connect it as your primary domain. - Add other languages or markets only with separate URLs; let Shopify handle hreflang.
- Build one useful page per real location, never per neighbourhood you'd like to rank in.
- Add
LocalBusinessmarkup to your location page and test it. - Ask every customer for a review, with no incentives, and reply to them.
- Set up Search Console, submit your sitemap and watch your Singapore queries.
- Claim Apple and Bing listings with identical details.
Frequently asked questions
Can an online-only Shopify store get a Google Business Profile?
No. Google's eligibility rules list online-only businesses as ineligible. A business needs a location customers can visit during stated hours, or it must travel to customers as a service-area business. A virtual office, rented mailing address or P.O. box doesn't qualify. Online-only stores can still send local signals through their domain, content, structured data and Search Console.
Should a Singapore Shopify store use .sg or .com.sg?
Either works for local SEO, because Google treats both as Singapore country-code domains. Anyone can register .sg, with a local administrative contact for foreign applicants. .com.sg is for entities registered, or registering, with ACRA, Enterprise Singapore or a Singapore professional body. A country-code domain targets one country, so if you sell across several markets, a .com with Shopify Markets subfolders may suit you better.
Can I still set Singapore as my target country in Google Search Console?
No. Google removed the International Targeting report and its country setting from Search Console in September 2022. Google still uses hreflang. To show you serve Singapore, use signals such as a .sg domain, a local address and phone number on your site, SGD prices, links from local sites, and a Business Profile if you qualify.
Are neighbourhood or MRT pages good for local SEO?
Only when each page is genuinely useful, such as a page for a real shop or pickup point with its own address, hours and directions. Google's spam policies treat many near-identical pages targeting different towns, which funnel visitors to the same place, as doorway abuse, and lists of place names as keyword stuffing.
Can I show star ratings from my Google reviews on my Shopify site?
You can display them, but they won't earn review stars in search for your business. Google's review snippet guidelines say pages with LocalBusiness or Organization markup aren't eligible for stars when the business controls reviews about itself, including through an embedded Google or Facebook reviews widget. Product reviews follow separate product review rules.
Setting up a new store? A Shopify trial lets you connect your .sg domain, add your shop or pickup location and turn on pickup in store before you launch.
