Shopify POS for a Singapore shop
Shopify POS is Shopify's point-of-sale app. It runs on an iPad, iPhone or Android device, rings up sales at a counter or a market table, and shares one product list, one stock count and one customer list with your online store. In Singapore it works with Shopify Payments, Shopify's own card readers and Tap to Pay on Android. A few local habits need workarounds, though. PayNow isn't built in, Tap to Pay on iPhone isn't offered here yet, and GST receipts are something you set up and check yourself.
This guide covers what's available in Singapore today, what to buy, how to set it up, and where the gaps are. Shopify changes POS features and hardware often, so check the links in the References before you spend money.
The short version
- Two tiers. The basic POS features (Shopify calls them POS Lite) come with every paid Shopify plan. POS Pro is a monthly add-on, charged per location, and it's sold in Singapore. See Shopify's Singapore POS pricing page for the current price.
- Card readers sold for Singapore: the Stripe WisePad 3 and the countertop POS Terminal.
- Tap to Pay on Android works in Singapore. Tap to Pay on iPhone doesn't yet, at least not in Shopify POS.
- At the counter, Shopify Payments takes Visa, Mastercard and American Express, plus Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay on contactless hardware.
- PayNow and GrabPay aren't built into Shopify POS. The usual fix is a custom payment type that you confirm by hand.
- GST-registered? Show GST-inclusive prices, and check that your receipts carry the details IRAS asks for. Not registered? Don't charge GST at all.
POS Lite and POS Pro
Every paid Shopify plan includes Shopify POS at no extra cost. Shopify's Singapore pricing page calls this tier "casual in-person selling". It covers taking payments in person, simple customer profiles, and returns at the location where the item was bought. How many staff can log in to POS depends on your Shopify plan.
POS Pro is a monthly add-on for each retail location. Shopify's Singapore pricing pages list it in SGD alongside the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans, so it's available here. We won't quote the price because it changes. Check Shopify's POS pricing page and its main pricing page.
Here's what POS Pro adds, according to Shopify's pricing page, its features page and the Help Center:
- Staff: unlimited POS staff, POS-only staff accounts (staff who never see your Shopify admin), custom roles and permissions, and manager approvals for things like discounts.
- Returns and exchanges: exchanges at the register, and returns or exchanges at any location, including for online orders. On POS Lite you can refund, but Shopify's exchange flow needs POS Pro.
- Omnichannel tools inside the POS app: managing in-store pickup orders, local delivery, ship-from-store, and emailing a cart to a customer.
- Inventory work in the app: receiving stock, sending transfers and doing quick counts with a barcode scanner.
- Customers and reports: rich customer profiles, the option to make customer details required at checkout, and daily retail reports.
- Hardware warranty: Shopify says its hardware has a one-year warranty, or two years with POS Pro.
Shopify recommends POS Pro for shops with a lot of foot traffic, several levels of staff, or a large catalogue. A one-person stall can usually start on POS Lite and upgrade a location later.
Which phone or tablet you can use
Shopify POS runs only on iOS and Android. It doesn't run on laptops, desktop computers or Amazon Fire tablets. Shopify's Help Center lists these minimums:
- iPad: iPad 5th generation or later, iPad Air 2 or later, iPad mini 4 or later, or any iPad Pro, running iPadOS 15.1 or later.
- iPhone: iPhone 7 or later on iOS 15.1 or later.
- Android: a phone or tablet on Android 10 or later, with Google Play Services and Google Mobile Services.
Those minimums are going up. Shopify says that in 2027 Android devices will need Android 13 or later and iPhones and iPads will need iOS 18 or later, and devices on older systems must be updated by 6 June 2027. If you're buying a device now, buy one that already meets the 2027 minimums. Some features, Tap to Pay in particular, also need newer devices.
Card readers and Tap to Pay in Singapore
Shopify's card-reader table for Asia-Pacific lists two readers for Singapore, both running on Shopify Payments. The Shopify Hardware Store for Singapore sells both:
- Stripe WisePad 3. A small Bluetooth reader with a PIN pad. It takes tap and chip payments but not swipe. It suits market stalls and counters where you're already using a phone or tablet.
- Shopify POS Terminal. A countertop terminal with a customer-facing display. It takes tap, chip and swipe, connects over Wi-Fi, and works alongside a tablet or phone running Shopify POS.
The Singapore store also lists the Verifone Victa Mobile, an all-in-one handheld. When we checked, though, its product page only offered to email you when it becomes available in your region, and Shopify's card-reader table doesn't list it for Singapore. Treat it as not yet available here.
Shopify's table also lists an external card terminal, which works anywhere. That's a terminal from another payment provider. Shopify POS doesn't talk to it: you charge on the terminal, then record the payment in POS (see the section on payments below).
Tap to Pay on Android: yes
Shopify lists Singapore as a supported region for Tap to Pay on Android, and Stripe, which processes Shopify Payments, lists Singapore for Tap to Pay on Android too. With it, a compatible Android phone takes contactless cards and digital wallets without a separate reader. Shopify's requirements include:
- Shopify Payments activated, and a store currency that matches your location's currency (SGD for a Singapore shop).
- Android 13 or later, with a security patch from the last 12 months.
- NFC turned on, location services on, developer mode off, and no screen-recording apps running.
- An internet connection.
Shopify keeps a list of tested phones and handhelds, including recent Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Oppo, Xiaomi and OnePlus models, and says phones not on the list might also work. Tap to Pay on Android accepts contactless Visa, Mastercard and American Express. If a payment needs a PIN, the phone shows a PIN screen. Cards that have to be inserted need a card reader.
Tap to Pay on iPhone: not in Shopify POS yet
Shopify's Tap to Pay on iPhone page lists the regions where Shopify POS supports it: Canada, the United States, twelve European countries, Australia and New Zealand. Singapore isn't on the list. Shopify's Singapore payments page likewise features Tap to Pay on Android but not on iPhone.
This can be confusing, because Apple and Stripe both list Singapore as a country where Tap to Pay on iPhone is available. That's the general availability of the technology. Shopify POS hasn't switched it on for Singapore stores yet. If you sell from an iPhone or iPad, pair a WisePad 3. If Shopify adds Singapore later, its activation steps start in the POS app under Settings > Payments, so that's where to look.
Receipt printers, cash drawers and barcode scanners
You can sell without any of these. A full counter usually wants all three, though. Here's what Shopify's Help Center lists as available in Singapore, matched against what the Singapore Hardware Store was selling when we checked:
- Receipt printer: the Epson OmniLink TM-m30III, which connects over Bluetooth, Ethernet or USB, plus Wi-Fi for Android. Shopify also supports Epson's TM-T20 and TM-T88 series bought from other sellers.
- Cash drawers: Kingly small and large cash drawers. A cash drawer opens automatically when it's cabled to the receipt printer, and it opens with its key if it isn't.
- Barcode scanners: the Zebra DS2208 (USB), the Zebra DS2278 (cordless) and the Socket Mobile S720. Shopify says Shopify POS supports most HID barcode scanners, and you can also scan with your device's camera.
- Connectivity: the Shopify POS Hub, for wiring USB accessories to an iPad or Android tablet.
If you already own hardware, check it on Shopify's compatibility page before you buy duplicates. Prices are on the Hardware Store.
What customers can pay with at the counter
Cards and wallets through Shopify Payments
Shopify Payments supports Shopify POS in Singapore. Shopify's Singapore payment-methods page says you can take in-person payments with a Shopify card reader on Shopify Payments, or with an external terminal from a third-party processor.
For in-person card brands, Shopify lists Visa, Mastercard and American Express for all locations. It limits Discover, Diners Club, JCB and UnionPay to certain countries, and Singapore isn't one of them. So although UnionPay is on Shopify's Singapore list for online checkout, don't expect it at the counter. On contactless hardware, customers can also pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay using a supported card.
Rates for in-person card payments differ from online rates and from manually keyed cards. Shopify publishes them on its pricing page.
PayNow and GrabPay: not built in
This is where Singapore is different. Shopify Payments doesn't offer PayNow in Singapore at all; see our PayNow and GrabPay guide for the online side. For the counter:
- Shopify's list of local payment methods for Shopify POS (the QR-code methods customers pay on their own phone) includes Alipay and WeChat Pay in Hong Kong and several European methods. It has nothing for Singapore.
- GrabPay, where Shopify offers it to Singapore stores (in early access), is for online checkout only. Shopify says it isn't available in Shopify POS.
The workarounds
1. A custom payment type. In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Point of Sale, edit the POS app, open Checkout, and add a custom payment type such as "PayNow". At the counter, the customer scans your business PayNow QR code, which you get from your bank or payment provider. Once you've seen the payment arrive in your banking app, you pick "PayNow" in POS. Things to know:
- Shopify says custom payment methods are only for tracking. Shopify doesn't process the money and doesn't check that it arrived, so confirming it is your job. A screenshot of a "successful" transfer on someone else's phone isn't the same as money in your account.
- Shopify says it charges no additional fees on custom payment methods. Your bank or provider may still charge.
- An order paid with a custom payment method can only be refunded with that same method in POS. In practice, you send the PayNow refund yourself and record it.
2. An external terminal. The same mechanism covers a terminal from another provider, for example one that takes local methods Shopify doesn't. Some Singapore providers, HitPay among them, sell their own terminals and in-person PayNow. These aren't integrated with Shopify POS: you ring up the sale in POS, charge on the other terminal, then record it with a custom payment type. Shopify suggests one custom payment type per terminal, or one per card type, which also makes end-of-day totals easier to reconcile.
3. A third-party payment app built for POS. Shopify says some third-party payment apps are "retail-compatible" and appear in your POS payment settings. When we checked, we didn't find a Singapore PayNow provider whose own documentation confirms a Shopify POS payment app. Check Point of Sale > Settings > Payments in your admin, and ask your provider directly before you assume one exists.
Setting it up: locations, staff and products
Add your shop as a location
Shopify POS needs multiple locations turned on in your store settings. Add your shop, or your market stall, as a location in your Shopify admin, then assign your POS device to it. That location matters more than it looks:
- Shopify POS calculates tax from the location assigned to the device.
- Shopify says the location must be in one of your shipping zones for tax to calculate correctly, even if you never ship anything. It's an easy step to miss if you only sell in person.
- Stock is tracked per location, so a sale at the counter comes out of that location's stock.
Staff accounts and PINs
Someone with Shopify admin and Point of Sale access logs in to Shopify POS on each device once. After that, staff unlock the app with their own PIN. Shopify's current PIN guide says PINs are 4 to 6 digits; an older FAQ entry still says four. Each sale and register action is recorded against the staff member who entered the PIN, so don't share PINs, however tempting it is on a busy Saturday. After five wrong PINs, POS blocks the next attempt for 30 seconds.
On POS Lite, staff need an account with access to your Shopify admin to use POS, and custom POS roles don't apply. POS-only staff accounts and custom roles come with POS Pro. If a checkout fails or is cancelled, Shopify POS asks the staff member to enter their PIN again. That's a deliberate check against walking off without paying.
Products, inventory and barcodes
- Choose where each product sells. In each product's availability settings you can sell it online, in store, or both. Products sold only at your stall can be available on Point of Sale alone.
- Stock stays in sync. Shopify POS syncs orders and inventory with your Shopify admin, so a sale at the counter reduces the stock your online store shows. While POS is offline, it syncs when the connection returns (see below).
- Barcodes. Add the manufacturer's barcode to each product or variant. For your own products, Shopify's free Retail Barcode Labels app generates Code 128 barcodes and prints labels on Dymo, Zebra or Avery-style printers. At checkout, scan with a barcode scanner or the device camera.
- Counts and receiving. On POS Pro you can receive stock, send transfers and do quick counts in the POS app. On POS Lite, do that work in your Shopify admin.
GST at the counter
Our GST guide for Singapore Shopify stores covers registration and the Shopify tax settings in detail. Here's how it applies at a physical counter.
If you're GST-registered
- Show GST-inclusive prices. IRAS requires GST-registered businesses to show prices that include GST, and that covers price tags and price lists as well as your website. Make sure the price on the shelf matches what POS charges.
- Set up tax in Shopify. Singapore stores use Shopify's Basic Tax, where you enter your GST registration number under Settings > Taxes and duties. Then turn on tax-inclusive pricing. POS uses the same settings for the location assigned to each device.
- Check your receipts. IRAS lets you issue a receipt instead of a tax invoice to customers who aren't GST-registered. The receipt must be serially printed and show your name, address and GST registration number, the date, the total including GST, and the words "Price payable includes GST". You must keep a duplicate.
- Business customers need a tax invoice. GST-registered customers need a tax invoice to claim input tax. If the sale is S$1,000 or less including GST, a simplified tax invoice is allowed. IRAS's retail guide says that above S$1,000 you must issue a full tax invoice if a GST-registered customer asks for one.
To put your GST registration number and the "Price payable includes GST" wording on printed receipts, use Shopify's receipt visual editor, which every POS plan has. In your admin, go to Sales channels > Point of Sale, edit Receipts, and add a custom text block to the header or footer. Email and SMS receipts are edited separately, under Settings > Notifications > Customer notifications > POS and mobile receipt. Then print a test receipt and check it against IRAS's list. Shopify says that you're responsible for making sure your receipts meet local legal requirements. It also notes that receipts for orders processed offline don't show tax registration information, so print-check an offline sale too.
If you're not registered
IRAS says non-GST-registered businesses aren't allowed to charge GST, and its general guide says a tax invoice must not be issued if you aren't registered. Leave tax collection off in Shopify, and keep "GST", a GST number and "Tax invoice" off your receipts and price tags.
Online and in store: pickup, returns and customer profiles
The main reason to run POS on Shopify, rather than on a separate till, is that both channels share the same products, stock, orders and customers.
- Buy online, pick up in store. Turn on Pickup in store for your shop's location under Settings > Shipping and delivery; the location must be set to fulfil online orders. Our Singapore shipping guide covers the checkout side. Managing pickup orders inside the POS app (preparing them, notifying customers, marking them picked up) is a POS Pro feature, according to Shopify's Help Center and its features page.
- Returns and exchanges. POS Lite handles returns at the location where the item was bought. POS Pro adds exchanges, and returns or exchanges at any location, including online orders brought back to the shop. You can't refund more to a payment method than the customer paid with it.
- Customer profiles. POS can save a customer's contact details, order history (online and in store) and marketing preferences. POS Pro adds richer profiles and can make customer details required at checkout.
The PDPA bit
Asking for an email or phone number at the counter is collecting personal data, so the Personal Data Protection Act applies. Keep it simple:
- Collect what you need for the purpose you give. An email address for a digital receipt is fine. Using it for promotions needs a separate, deliberate marketing opt-in, and POS has marketing opt-in options for that.
- Don't ask for NRIC numbers for a membership or loyalty sign-up. Under PDPC's advisory guidelines, organisations generally can't collect NRIC numbers unless the law requires it or it's needed to verify someone's identity to a high degree of fidelity. A phone number or email does the job.
- If you take offline card payments, Shopify requires you to collect a phone number or email in case the payment is declined later. Tell the customer why you're asking.
Our PDPA guide for Singapore Shopify stores covers consent, privacy notices and the Do Not Call rules in more detail.
Selling in a mall: gross turnover reports
Shopify's Help Center has a section on Singapore for this. Mall tenancy agreements often set part of the rent as a percentage of gross turnover, so the landlord may require a daily gross turnover (GTO) report from your POS. Shopify POS doesn't do GTO reporting itself. Shopify points to third-party options, including EIX and EISOL, Exporteo, or an ERP if you already use one. EIX lists Shopify POS among the POS systems it connects to, and the Shopify App Store has GTO apps that list Singapore malls. If you're signing a mall lease, ask the landlord which format they need before you commit to a setup. Some of these services charge for it.
Offline mode and its limits
Shopify POS needs internet to sync with your admin, send emailed receipts and capture card payments. If Wi-Fi drops, or you're at a venue with weak signal, here's what still works, per Shopify's Help Center:
- Cash and custom payments work offline for every POS user, through offline checkout.
- Card payments offline are optional, and you turn them on in your admin. You set a daily limit per device and a limit per transaction, give staff the permission, and use a compatible reader (the list includes the WisePad 3 and POS Terminal). The payments are captured when the device reconnects. Until then you won't know whether a card was declined, so Shopify suggests reconnecting as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours.
- Tap to Pay (iPhone or Android), swipe and manually keyed cards don't work offline. If your stall relies on Tap to Pay, offline means cash or a custom payment type only.
- Other things that stop working offline include logging in, creating products, searching for or creating customers, gift cards, tips, returns, exchanges and voids, discount codes and automatic discounts (manual discounts still work), and fulfilling pickup orders.
Two habits help. Log in and load your products before you lose signal, because POS needs internet to import products at login. And don't log out or switch off the device while you have unsynced offline sales, because Shopify warns that you could lose offline orders. Receipt printers, cash drawers and barcode scanners keep working offline over Bluetooth, USB or the local network.
Pop-up or full shop: which setup fits
Weekend bazaars, markets and pop-ups. The lightest setup is an Android phone with Tap to Pay, or any supported phone with a WisePad 3, on POS Lite. Add a "PayNow" custom payment type and a printed QR code, because Singapore customers will ask. Think about connectivity before the day: Tap to Pay doesn't work offline, while a WisePad 3 can take offline card payments if you've switched that on. A battery pack does no harm either.
A permanent shop. A typical counter is an iPad or Android tablet, a POS Terminal, a receipt printer, a cash drawer and a barcode scanner, with the POS Hub if you want wired connections. POS Pro starts to earn its fee when you have several staff with different permissions, customers who want to exchange items, online orders collected in store, or stock counts to do. In a mall, add GTO reporting to the plan.
Either way, keep GST, PayNow and the PDPA in mind from the first sale. They're the parts of the setup that are specific to Singapore.
FAQ
Can I use Tap to Pay on iPhone with Shopify POS in Singapore?
Not as of 4 October 2026. Shopify's Tap to Pay on iPhone page doesn't list Singapore as a supported region, even though Apple and Stripe list Singapore for Tap to Pay on iPhone in general. Tap to Pay on Android is supported in Singapore with Shopify Payments on Android 13 or later. With an iPhone or iPad, use a WisePad 3 card reader.
Can customers pay by PayNow at a Shopify POS counter?
Not through Shopify Payments, which doesn't offer PayNow in Singapore. The usual workaround is a custom payment type named PayNow. The customer scans your business PayNow QR code, you confirm the money has arrived in your bank account, and then you record the sale. Shopify doesn't process or verify custom payments.
Do I need POS Pro for a small shop?
Not to start. The POS Lite features included with every paid Shopify plan cover card payments, simple customer profiles and returns at the original location. POS Pro is a per-location monthly add-on. It adds POS-only staff accounts with roles and permissions, exchanges and returns at any location, pickup order management in POS, inventory counts and receiving, and retail reports. Check Shopify's Singapore pricing page for the current price.
What should a GST-registered shop print on Shopify POS receipts?
For customers who aren't GST-registered, IRAS allows a serially printed receipt showing your name, address and GST registration number, the date, the total including GST, and the words "Price payable includes GST". GST-registered customers need a tax invoice, or a simplified tax invoice if the sale is S$1,000 or less. Add the missing details with a custom text block in Shopify's receipt editor, then print a test receipt to check it. If you aren't GST-registered, don't charge GST or print a GST number.
Does Shopify POS work without internet?
Partly. Offline checkout lets you take cash and custom payments. If you turn on offline card payments in your admin, compatible readers such as the WisePad 3 and POS Terminal can take card payments, which are captured when you reconnect, but you take the risk of a later decline. Tap to Pay, returns, exchanges, gift cards, discount codes and customer search don't work offline.
If you're planning a shop or a market stall, a Shopify trial gives you time to add your products, set up a PayNow custom payment type and run a test sale through POS before you buy any hardware.
