Questions Singapore merchants ask about Shopify

Information checked as of 10 October 2026

Setting up a Shopify store in Singapore raises the same questions again and again: can customers pay with PayNow, do I need to register for GST, can I get a grant? This page gives a short answer to each, with the official source and a link to the full guide on this blog. It's meant to be skimmed. Where an answer depends on something that changes, we say so and link to the live page.

This is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Check the linked official pages, or ask a qualified adviser, before you act.

The short version

Payments

Can I accept GrabPay?

Possibly. Shopify lists GrabPay as an early-access local payment method for Shopify Payments accounts in Singapore, for customers in Singapore paying in SGD, and says it isn't available to all eligible merchants. If it isn't in your Shopify Payments settings, your store isn't in the programme yet. GrabPay also doesn't work in Shop Pay, the Shop app or Shopify POS. Shopify's Singapore payment methods page shows the current list. Full guide: PayNow and GrabPay on Shopify in Singapore.

Can I use my own Stripe account?

Not for Shopify checkout. Shopify says its payment gateway availability rules block Stripe as a separate gateway in countries where Shopify Payments is supported, and Singapore is one of them. Shopify Payments is the Stripe-powered option; for anything it lacks, such as PayNow, you add a provider from Shopify's third-party provider list. See PayNow and GrabPay on Shopify.

Can I offer cash on delivery?

Yes, as a manual payment method in Shopify, which means you confirm payment yourself after delivery. Ninja Van says its drivers can collect payment on your behalf and that PayNow is accepted as a COD payment method, although its delivery terms apply to each parcel. Ask any other courier directly whether it collects cash for goods. Full guide: Cash on delivery for a Singapore Shopify store.

Can I offer buy now, pay later?

Yes, but not through Shopify's own instalment product. Shopify says Shop Pay Installments is available to eligible stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. In Singapore, providers such as Atome through HitPay and PayLater by Grab through HitPay connect to a Shopify checkout. Fees are set by each provider, so check their own pages. Selling in person and delivering

Is Shopify POS available in Singapore?

Yes. Shopify has a Singapore POS page and Shopify Payments can take in-person card payments with a supported reader. Two limits to know: PayNow and GrabPay aren't built into POS, so a custom payment type or a separate terminal is needed for them, and Tap to Pay on iPhone is only offered in the countries Shopify lists, so check that page for Singapore before you plan around it. Can I buy discounted Shopify shipping labels in Singapore?

No. Shopify's shipping label setup page lists the fulfillment locations where you can buy labels, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and several European countries. Singapore isn't on the list. Singapore stores create labels through a carrier's own app or account. SingPost, Ninja Van and DHL Express each have a Shopify app: see SingPost, Ninja Van and DHL Express. Full guide: Shipping from a Singapore Shopify store.

Rules and compliance

Do I need to follow the PDPA?

Yes, if you collect customer names, addresses, emails or phone numbers, which every store does. The PDPC says organisations must appoint a Data Protection Officer, and the Act itself requires it in section 11. You also need consent for marketing messages, a way to handle access requests and, for serious breaches, notification to the PDPC. Full guide: PDPA for a Singapore Shopify store.

Do I have to accept returns?

For faulty goods, yes: Singapore's Lemon Law gives buyers rights if goods don't conform to the contract, and defects that appear within six months of delivery are presumed to have existed at delivery, as CASE also explains. A “no refunds” notice can't remove those rights. Change-of-mind returns aren't covered by that law, so your own policy decides, and you should state it clearly. Full guide: Returns, refunds and Singapore's Lemon Law on Shopify.

Domain and search

Do I need a .sg domain?

No. Shopify lets you connect a domain bought elsewhere or use one it sells, and nothing in its setup requires a particular ending. For search, Google says a country-code domain such as .sg is one signal of the country you target, alongside hreflang, a local address and phone number, local language and currency. A .com can work for a Singapore store if you send those other signals. Registering a .sg has its own rules, so read SGNIC's categories and rules first. Selling overseas

Do I need an export permit or to charge GST on overseas orders?

Often neither. Singapore Customs exempts parcel post and air exports worth S$1,000 or less in total from permits, unless the goods are dutiable or controlled. IRAS lets registered businesses zero-rate exports if they keep the export documents, generally within 60 days. The buyer's country then applies its own duties and import taxes. The five questions asked most

These five come up first for almost every new store. The answers are repeated in the FAQ below, in plain text.

FAQ

Does Shopify support PayNow in Singapore?

Not through Shopify Payments. Shopify's Singapore payment methods page lists cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay and some local methods, but not PayNow. To take PayNow, add a third-party provider such as HitPay, which says PayNow is enabled by default for Singapore businesses and settles in SGD, or set PayNow up as a manual payment method and confirm each transfer yourself.

Do I need to register for GST?

Only when your taxable turnover passes the threshold. IRAS makes registration compulsory if your taxable turnover was more than S$1 million in a calendar year, or you expect it to pass S$1 million in the next 12 months. Below that you can register voluntarily. If you aren't registered, you must not charge GST. Exports can be zero-rated, but zero-rated sales still count toward the S$1 million.

Do I need ACRA registration to sell on Shopify?

Usually yes. ACRA says you must register if you carry out an activity for profit on a regular basis, and it names online stores, drop shipping and selling through social media as examples. The main exemption is trading only under your own full NRIC name. A brand name for your store means you need to register a business.

Can I get a government grant for my Shopify store?

Possibly, under the EDGE Grant. Enterprise Singapore replaced EDG, PSG and MRA with EDGE, which opened on 30 September 2026. Its E-Commerce Online Shop activity supports software costs for up to 12 months, with qualifying costs capped at S$5,000 and up to 50% support for SMEs, which is up to S$2,500. It only covers pre-approved solutions on IMDA's SMEs Go Digital, so check whether your Shopify package is listed, and apply before you pay a supplier.

How long do Shopify Payments payouts take in Singapore?

Shopify's minimum settlement time in Singapore is 4 business days, and new accounts start longer. After Shopify sends the payout, your bank adds 1 to 3 business days. Payouts go to a Singapore SGD current account, not a savings account. Check Settings > Payments in your Shopify admin for your own schedule.
